I knew Rich Goldsmith in high school from our association on the cross-country and track teams. I was an underclassman and member of the class of '69 and always looked up to Rich as a leader. Rich was a gifted endurance runner and led our cross-country team to a Cardinal Conference Championship, Mansfield Invitational Championship, District Championship, a 2nd place finish in the Ohio State Regional Championship and a 16th place finish in the State Chamionships in 1967-68. I remember Rich as a quiet but no-nonsence leader. I noticed that the Class website had a blank page after his passing in 2012, so I thought I'p pass on his Obit to the rest of his classmates.
James Goldsmith Jr
James Richard "Rich" Goldsmith, Jr 61 of Bellefontaine, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana May 26, 1950, the son of the late James R. "Jim" and Mary Laurene (Wingfield) Goldsmith. The family would later move to Ohio where Rich graduated from Ashland High School in 1968 and Urbana University in 1974. Rich married his soul mate, Anita Carol (Kincaid) Goldsmith, October 18, 1991, who survives. Also surviving are children, Chad Webb of Raeford, North Carolina, Jennifer Webb of Bolivar, Ross Goldsmith of Mechanicsburg, Ohio and Shelby Goldsmith of Bellefontaine; a sister, Lauren Adhlay of Rochester, New Hampshire and a grandother, Laura Nenie Wingfield of Mena, Arkansas.
Rich worked at Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc. for twenty years as an Engineering Coordinator, and leaves behind many dear friends and colleagues. His passions included dirt bike riding, working outdoors, running and spending time with his family and friends.
He was extremely proud of his family history as his grandfather and great grandmother, Frank J.W. and Emily Alice Goldsmith (Illman), were survivors of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic April 15, 1912. Nine-year-old Frankie and his mother stepped into the last lifeboat that left the deck of the Titanic about 20 minutes before the ship foundered. Rich's great- grandfather, Frank J. Goldsmith Sr., drowned in the sinking and his body was never recovered.
Rich was slso a loving grandfather to Emerson Joy Webb, as well as a caring uncle to several nieces.
Thanks for your rememberance of Rich. Penny and I raised our three daughters on a farm just north of Urbana. For a while in the 80s we lived in Urbana near the city pool. One day, walking the girls to the pool I saw Rich in his yard.We had no idea that he lived less than a block away. Very kool! We had a nice visit but soon we moved and kindof lost touch. Another example of how small our world is! So sad that his life was taken by that terrible disease so early in his life!
